How to Prepare Your Home for Exterior Spray Painting

KERNI PAINT Team··5 min read

A professional exterior spray paint job can completely transform the look of your home. But the quality of the result depends heavily on what happens before the first drop of paint hits the surface. Here's what you need to know about preparing your home for exterior spray painting.

Clear the Perimeter

Before the crew arrives, move anything within 6–8 feet of your exterior walls. That includes patio furniture, planters, barbecues, garden hoses, and decorative items. Spray painting produces overspray — fine mist that can travel further than you'd expect. The crew will mask and protect areas, but giving them a clear workspace speeds up the process and reduces risk.

Trim Back Vegetation

Shrubs, tree branches, and climbing vines that touch or hang close to your siding need to be trimmed back. The crew needs access to every surface, and vegetation traps moisture against the wall which can cause adhesion problems. Trim back at least 12 inches from the wall surface. If you have delicate garden beds, let the crew know so they can lay extra drop cloths.

Note Any Damage

Walk around your home and note any cracks, peeling paint, rotted wood, or damaged stucco. A reputable painting company will address surface repairs before painting, but pointing out known issues helps them prepare the right materials. Painting over damaged surfaces without repair is a waste of money — the finish will fail at the weak points.

Wash Windows and Clean Gutters

While not strictly necessary, clean windows and gutters make the masking process faster and more effective. Tape and plastic sheeting adhere better to clean surfaces. If your gutters are overflowing with debris, the water runoff during prep washing could cause issues.

Plan for Weather

In Alberta, weather is always a factor. Professional crews monitor conditions closely — ideal spray painting weather is dry, above 10°C, and low wind. Be flexible with your schedule, especially in spring and fall. A crew that postpones for poor weather is protecting your investment, not wasting your time.

What About Pets and Kids?

Keep pets indoors or away from the work area during painting. The fumes from exterior paints are mild but noticeable, and curious pets can walk through wet surfaces. Kids should stay clear of ladders and equipment. Most crews will set up caution tape or barriers around the active work zone.

The Day Before

Close all windows and ensure exterior doors are accessible. If you have a security system with motion sensors near the exterior, consider adjusting the sensitivity temporarily. Let your neighbors know about the work — they'll appreciate the heads-up, especially if there's a shared fence line or close property boundary.

What the Crew Handles

A professional spray painting crew handles all surface preparation: power washing, scraping, sanding, priming, and masking. You don't need to do any of this yourself. Your job is simply to clear the way and make the home accessible. The crew takes care of the rest.
