Deck & Fence Staining
Protect and beautify your outdoor wood — before winter does the damage
Professional Deck & Fence in Alberta
Alberta winters are brutal on untreated wood. Moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, UV radiation, and foot traffic will crack, grey, and rot an unprotected deck or fence within a few seasons. Our deck and fence staining service pressure-washes, preps, and applies penetrating oil-based or water-based stains and sealers that protect wood from the inside out. We use professional spray application for even penetration and complete coverage — including balusters and lattice that are nearly impossible to coat properly by hand.
What's Included
Everything you should expect from a professional job — all included, no surprises.
How It Works
Our proven process — from first contact to final walkthrough.
Assessment & Stain Selection
We assess the wood species, condition, and any existing stain. We recommend a stain type and opacity level based on the wood condition and your visual preference.
Pressure Washing
A full pressure wash removes dirt, algae, mildew, and old chalking stain. This opens the wood grain for maximum stain penetration.
Sanding & Brightening
Rough or grey wood is sanded and a wood brightener is applied to restore natural tone and open the grain before staining.
Spray Stain Application
Stain is spray-applied for complete, even coverage — including between balusters, under railings, and across every board face and edge.
Back-Brush & Final Coat
A crew member back-brushes all spray-applied stain to work it into the grain. A second coat is applied where needed for solid coverage.
What Affects the Cost
Every project is different. These are the key factors that determine your final quote — there are no hidden fees, and you receive a detailed written breakdown before any work begins.
- Square footage of deck surface
- Number of balusters and railing sections
- Current condition of wood (new vs. weathered)
- Whether fence is included and its linear footage
- Stain type selected (oil vs. water-based, opacity level)

“Our cedar deck was turning grey and starting to show cracks. KERNI pressure washed it, sanded the rough spots, and applied a semi-transparent stain that brought it back to life. Looks better than when it was built.”
Common Questions
Everything you need to know before booking deck & fence.
With a quality penetrating stain and proper application, most decks need re-staining every 3–5 years in Alberta's climate. Oil-based stains typically last longer than water-based.
If the existing solid stain or paint is in good condition, we can re-coat over it. If it is peeling, we may recommend stripping it back first. We will assess and advise.
